YORK – Leah Thomas, 25 years old and a York native, will be competing in the Miss Arab USA Pageant.

The daughter of Bill and Mary Thomas of York will be part of the pageant on Jan. 21, which will be held in Chandler, Ariz.

Thomas explained that she saw an online ad that featured a U.S. woman of Syrian origin who was the reigning Miss Arab USA.

That caught her attention, as the contestants are Americans of Arab descent.

Thomas explained that her father’s grandfather came to the United States from Lebanon. When he arrived here, he changed his name from Howayeck to Thomas.

Thomas said she’s always been fascinated with that aspect of her family’s history.

She was also interested in the aspects of this particular pageant as it is a charitable event with no swimsuit competition and a focus on “personality, skills, knowledge, education and community involvement.

She asked for permission to participate because her Lebanese heritage comes from a great-great-grandparent rather than a parent or grandparent. The permission was granted and after a series of interviews and other participation in the pre-pageant requirements, she was informed that she was chosen as one of 100 finalists . . . and then later she advanced to the final 20 who will physically be participating in the pageant.

Thomas is seeking support in an online vote – she says the winner of that portion automatically advances to the final five contestants. To vote, a person must donate a minimum of $10 to the pageant at vote.missarab.org.

The winner of the Miss Arab USA will make appearances – as well as tour refugee camps – in an effort to bridge cultural gaps and bring more awareness about her heritage and that of many other Americans.
