For Asia Alfasi, the reason politics dominates comics in the Arab world is simple. “Our lives are a lot more politicised than yours,” she says.
As a Libyan brought up in Scotland and now living in Birmingham, Alfasi has multiple viewpoints of Arab identity and politics, and particularly of the relationship between the Arab world and the west. The problem for Libyans, she says, is that they have been avid importers of other cultures without ever exporting their own. “People [in the west] think: who are these Arabs? Are they The Other? Is this really a clash of civilisations?”
