WhoIsHussain? Hosting a Hot Meal for Homeless in Detroit
Press Release from WhoIsHussain?
In honor of the holy month of Ramadan, international organization, Who Is Hussain?, plans a hot meal lunch for the homeless at Cass community services on Saturday, June 11, at 12pm at 11850 Woodrow Wilson, Detroit, Michigan.
Ramadan marks days of fasting from sunrise to sunset. The month is celebrated by Muslims giving to the needy and the deserving poor in their communities. WhoIsHussein seek nearness to God by the way of giving and helping others in need. Although the whole team of WhoisHussain will be fasting, they will be serving hot meals to the needy of Cass Community services on June 11.
The group consists of local volunteers who have pooled together funds to sponsor the event. This year is particularly difficult for the Muslim community due to the almost 18 hour fasts set for the holy month of Ramadan Coinciding with the month of June.
WhoIsHussain in Michigan is part of the worldwide Who Is Hussain campaign, which is popular on social media. They are known for organizing many charitable events like feeding the homeless, hosting food drives and distribution, and planning blood drives. They have also arranged candle light vigils at times of Paris and Brussels bombings, and have spoken in support of social justice.
WhoIsHussain was inspired by the story of an early Islamic leader, Imam Hussain ibn Ali, who was the grandson of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad. Hussain ibn Ali voiced his stand early on against growing violence, extremism, and disregard of human dignity in the Muslim world. He was brutally killed after being denied water for several days. On the anniversary of Hussain’s death, they themselves forsake food and water for most of the day as a type of remembrance of Hussain and his family’s tribulations.
WhoIsHussain and other Muslim-based humanitarian organizations are examples of what the religion of Islam is NOT about – extremism and terror. The life and example of Hussain that has inspired many world leaders like Gandhi in history has emphasized the value of human life and dignity.
