Washington Celebrates International Solidarity Day with the Palestinian People
The General Delegation of the PLO to the United States, hosted a reception celebrating the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. The event was a great success and was attended by a large number of Arab and foreign ambassadors and diplomats, representatives from the American Government, presidents of various Palestinian and American NGOs and organizations, distinguished press and media personnel and representatives from the Arab and Palestinian Community in the United States.
Ambassador Maen Rashid Areikat gave a speech in which he pointed to the importance of this event, which became a UN-Organized Observance on November 29th, 1977, to show Solidarity with the Palestinian People in their pursuit of freedom and independence. Ambassador Areikat assured the guests that the Palestinian people will not cease their efforts to achieve freedom until the Israeli Occupation ends, and a Palestinian state is born with East Jerusalem as its capital, and the achievement of a just solution for the refugee problem as mandated by the UN General Assembly Resolution 194. Further, Ambassador Areikat thanked the guests for their presence at this event and for their true and honest support of the Palestinians People.
Following the ambassador’s speech, on behalf of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, President of the State of Palestine, he bestowed the Order of the State of Palestine, The Star of Merit upon the well-respected diplomat and brilliant writer and thinker, Dr. Clovis Maksoud. This Honor was presented to him to thank him for all his efforts throughout the years in support of Arab causes and especially the Palestinian cause. Dr. Clovis Maksoud thanked President Mahmoud Abbas for this honor and reassured his belief in the legitimacy of the Palestinian just cause and the inevitability of the success of the Palestinian People in achieving freedom and independence.
Dr. Clovis Maksoud is a Lebanese national, who was the representative of the Arab League at the United Nations, and a Professor of Political Science and International Relations at the American University in Washington. In addition, Dr. Maksoud was a lawyer, and a journalist, he was the Editor in chief at Al Ahram Newspaper, and the Editor in chief at the Weekly Al Nahar, and wrote many articles and books about the Middle East.
