UAE to Host 2023 UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) Amid Escalating Heat Wave

The 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference, or Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC, known as COP28, will take place at the Expo City in Dubai. The event runs from November 30 to December 12, 2023. As worldwide temperatures continue to increase the UAE will host this conference. The country has taken on a significant role in the fight against climate change. As the conference nears it comes at a crucial time when the Middle East faces an escalating heat wave. Underlining how important it is to address climate-related issues both regionally and globally.
By hosting COP28, UAE shows its constant commitment to addressing climate change problems and supporting sustainable lifestyles. The conference comes as an important reminder of climate as it aims to encourage cooperation. As well as develop comprehensive strategies to address the urgent problem of global warming. By bringing together world leaders, experts, and activists.
Heat Waves in the Middle East
Recently, the Middle East has experienced a severe heat wave, which had many consequences. Not only on the environment but on human health as well. Temperatures in the Arabian Gulf have risen over 125°F (52°C), causing an increase in heat-related illnesses. As well as worries about water and food security. Her Excellency, the Minister of Climate Change and Environment in the UAE; Mariam Almheiri emphasized the significance of hosting COP28.
“The UAE’s hosting of COP28 this year, along with naming 2023 as the Year of Sustainability, is tangible evidence of our wise leadership’s vision and commitment to playing a leading role in the fight against climate change, which impacts humanity as a whole. UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has demonstrated the UAE’s commitment to uniting global efforts in line with the approach of our late founding leader, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan,” Almheiri expressed.
World leaders, decision-makers, scientists, and activists may assemble at COP28. Discussing the battle against climate change and how to map out the course ahead. Implementing the Paris Agreement will be at the center of the discussion. With a focus on raising global climate ambition to keep warming below 2 degrees Celsius. While aiming for 1.5 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial levels.
