Temporary Protected Status ("Tps") For Yemen
The Arab-American Civil Rights League (“ACRL”) applauds the humanitarian measures taken by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in approving Yemen’s Temporary Protected Status (“TPS”) designation. As a result of this TPS designation, eligible Yemeni nationals and those who last habitually resided in Yemen who are approved for TPS will not be removed from the United States, and may also receive an Employment Authorization Document (commonly known as a “work permit” or “work authorization”). The ACRL reminds individuals that they must apply for TPS by March 1, 2016. If approved, the TPS designation will remain in effect until March 7, 2017. Please note that applicants may apply to have the TPS’ filing fees waived, if the cost of applying for TPS is prohibitively expensive. To be eligible for TPS, applicants must demonstrate that they satisfy all eligibility criteria, including that they have been both “continuously physically present” and “continuously residing” in the United States since September 3, 2015. Applicants also undergo thorough security checks. Individuals with certain criminal records or who pose a threat to national security are not eligible for TPS. As a service to the community, the ACRL provides “Ask A Lawyer” sessions on Wednesdays at the ACRL office. Potential applicants with questions about TPS are encouraged to contact the ACRL at (313) 633-0231 for more information. The ACRL is monitoring developments in Yemen, and stands ready to assist those most in need in these harrowing times. |
