‘Déjà Vu’ All over Again—Arab Americans may finally get their own Checkbox from the U.S. Census Bureau

Under President Obama, in 2015, a question for the 2020 U.S. Census Bureau survey included identification of a respondent as “Middle Eastern or North African” (MENA). Importantly, MENA as a response would not be aggregated to the much broader ‘White’ category. The Trump administration killed the question. In 2022, some Congress members requested renewal of the MENA category for the 2030 Census. Contributing writer, John Mason reports on pro-Arab sentiment about the importance of the MENA tag, captured, as follows, “It’s like we always say, ‘White without the privilege.’ We’re counted as white, but we’ve never had the privilege that comes with it.”

Continued Israeli Double Assault on Palestinians – Confiscation of more Land, Stomping on their Human Rights

The IDF began its assault of Palestinian land in mid-July. It included confiscation of almost 1,500 acres in the area around Ramallah, justified by interests of protecting surrounding Jewish settlements. Contributing writer, John Mason, reports on this story and a shocking, opposing Israeli view that it is the Palestinians who are guilty of a land grab of Judea and Samaria. A second assault reported here is of IDF troops closing down several Palestinian human rights organizations. These groups are accused of being a front for a militant faction.

Biden goes Beyond Trump’s Commitment in Defending some Saudi and Gulf Countries

Disturbingly, President Biden is following ex-president Trump’s path. First, he is overlooking MBS’ part in the brutal murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi. Second, he intends to commit American soldiers’ lives to defend Gulf dictatorships. Contributing writer, John Mason, reports on these gross inconsistencies in U.S. policy towards Saudi Arabia and the Region.

U.S. – Persian Gulf Nations’ Relations Sour over Ukraine, Russia, Yemen, and Oil

Contributing writer, John Mason, discusses the Biden administration’s worsening relationships with Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates. Relations have become strained due to their refusal to increase oil output during a worldwide fuel shortage generated by the Russia-Ukraine war. The Gulf countries also failed to condemn Putin for his attack on Ukraine. Conversely, Saudi is angered with the U.S. for failing to protect it against Houthi-launched missiles from Yemen.

Three thousand new Israeli settler houses planned on Palestinian land—one more nail in the coffin for any dream of a two-state solution—Or a dream that may be already dead?

The Israeli plan to construct over 3,000 new housing units in several settler communities, some of which are deep in occupied territory on the West Bank, is a slap in the face to the Biden administration, Palestinians themselves, anti-occupation Israelis, the EU, UN and Arab countries. This plan makes it that much more difficult to settle the continuing conflict between Israel and Palestine and significantly dims the chances of creating a state of Palestine in the West Bank and Gaza. Contributing writer, John Mason, describes the impact of this recent Israeli move on the West Bank.

Qatar Continues its Principled Rejection of the Abraham Accords as Anti-Palestinian

Qatari diplomats are the advocates par excellence of Palestinians in international arenas, giving these diplomats an image of strong supporters of a pro-human rights foreign policy. Now they have taken the side of the Palestinians in the context of the Abraham Accords, which do very little for Palestinians either economically or in resolving the Israel Palestinian conflict. Contributing writer John Mason writes about Qatar’s principled stand.

Tit for tat or business as usual? AOC vows to block U.S. missile sales to Israel as Prime Minister Bennett says no to a Palestinian state

AOC vows to block U.S. missile sales to Israel as Prime Minister Bennett says no to a Palestinian state
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, congressional representative, along with several other progressive reps., is trying to halt the U.S. sale of missiles to Israel. The claim is that such missiles were used against Gaza the last time around and could be used like that again. This is a harder line of offense than is usual from the U.S. House. Meanwhile, an equally hard line has been taken by Israeli Prime Minister, Neftali Bennett, in claiming to put an end to any idea of a Palestinian state, whether part of a two-state or single Israeli-Palestinian state solution. Contributing writer, John Mason, takes us into the heart of this frayed issue.

New Israeli Prime Minister has discussions with the White House—with few prospects for the Palestinians

Israeli Prime Minister Bennet arrived in Washington last week to remake the U.S.-Israel relationship following the Trump-Netanyahu years of bias totally favoring Israel. Bennett’s one ‘concession’ to Biden was that he would not attempt to annex the West Bank. Because Bennet controls the Knesset by only one vote, he is in no position to make big promises anyway, but he has no intention of doing anything for the Palestinians, given his animosity towards them and his extreme anti-peace and anti-state stance. Contributing writer John Mason discusses this purely symbolic visit.

Does Afghanistan represent the death knell for the U.S. spread of human rights and democracy in the Middle East? 10 pros and cons

The ten responses to this important question about U.S. policy in nation state-building reflect how the U.S. has translated policy into action on the ground in this highly complex country, Afghanistan. 20 years of warfare and thousands of lives lost must be accounted for in American “after-action reports.” Here, we look at the many missteps the U.S. has taken, from beginning to end. Inadequate strategic planning and poor analysis along the way have led to a catastrophic end to the U.S. presence there. John Mason takes us through the ten steps.
