This is the thirty-third in Arab America’s series on American pathbreakers of Arab descent. The series includes personalities from entertainment, business, sports, science, academia, journalism, and politics, among other areas. Our thirty-third pathbreaker, depicted by contributing writer, John Mason, is Abdullah H. Hammoud, the mayor of the City of Dearborn, Michigan. Hammoud is the first Arab American and Muslim mayor in Dearborn’s history. Born on March 19, 1990, he is the son of Lebanese Shia immigrants, who fled their country during its civil war. Hammoud is the proud leader of a community that is home to one of the largest Middle Eastern and Muslim populations per capita in the U.S. He has most recently played a critical role in representing this population in its response to the massive loss of Palestinian lives in the Hamas-Israel war.
In 2023, we witnessed Elyanna’s rise to fame, highlighted by her historic performance at the Coachella Music Festival. With many artists such as Saint Levant, Bayou, Ali Gatie, etc…however, Elyanna has been able to distinguish herself from others by insisting on just performing in Arabic. While other artists blend English and French with their Arabic, she is resolute on keeping it just in Arabic, including at the Coachella. That is not the only thing that sets her apart from others; her extreme vocals, physicality, the edge way she dresses (which is styled by her sister), drums, and the spectacle of her performance also set her apart. Our thirty-second pathbreaker is Samia Halaby, a visual artist, activist, educator, and scholar. She was born in Jerusalem in 1936 during the British Mandate of Palestine. The daughter of Asaad Halaby and Foutonie Atallah Halaby, Samia was eleven years old when her family fled to Lebanon. Contributing writer, John Mason, depicts how in 1951 the family left Beirut to eventually settle in the U.S. Now 87, Samia has recently been outspoken in her support of Palestinians during the Israel-Gaza war.

According to a recent report compiled by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, more than half of the air-to-ground munitions Israel used in Gaza since the start of the war, October 7th, were “dumb bombs” or unguided bombs. The usage of the bomb posed a huge threat to an area like Gaza which is densely populated in the world. It is estimated that over 2 million people live on the territory. The U.S pressuring Israel to lessen its civilian death toll is contrary to their more recent weapons sale with Israel and has called many to question Biden’s administration even those of his own political party especially with the Palestinian death toll rising above 20,000 and those injured over 50,000. The usage of unguided bombs on a small and dense region has made the global population question Israel’s motivation, which is now seemingly malicious.

Our thirty-first pathbreaker is Dean Obeidallah, a famed Palestinian American lawyer, comedian, and journalist. He was born in New Jersey to a Palestinian immigrant father and an Italian American mother. He is well known for his SiriusXM Progress “The Dean Obeidallah Show” and for frequent appearances on Cable TV. Dean is also known for his standup comedic performances in the U.S. and in the Arab World. Contributing writer, John Mason, writes of his passion in calling for peace in Palestine and how he vehemently rejects antisemitic and anti-Arab sentiments wherever they occur in the world.

Our thirtieth pathbreaker is Laura Nader, a famed Lebanese American anthropologist, and not quite incidentally, sister of a famed Lebanese American public interest advocate, Ralph Nader. As Arab America contributing writer John Mason, describes, not only did their father emigrate to the U.S. for political reasons, giving all of his children a strong sense of “the other,” but it was her younger brother, Ralph, who first recommended that Laura study anthropology at university. She has since become a champion of justice for oppressed peoples around the world.
