Pathbreakers of Arab America: Helen Thomas

This is the twenty-fourth in Arab America’s series on American pathbreakers of Arab descent. The series includes personalities from entertainment, business, sports, science, academia, journalism, and politics, among other areas. Contributing writer, John Mason, writes about our twenty-fourth pathbreaker, Helen Thomas. Born in 1920 in Winchester, Kentucky, Thomas was the seventh of nine children of immigrants from Tripoli, Lebanon. Helen was an American reporter and author, and a long-serving member of the White House press corps. She covered the White House during the administrations of ten U.S. presidents—from the beginning of the Kennedy administration to the second year of Obama’s tenure. Thomas’ pro-Arab comments got her into hot water towards the end of her career.

Born in New York City, he is the son of Ismail Khalidi, a Saudi citizen of Palestinian birth in Jerusalem and his Lebanese-American mother. Khalidi is passionate about Palestine, where his distinguished family has deep roots in Jerusalem from Ottoman and British periods of rule. Greater Violence Expected against Palestinians–Especially Children–by New Far-Right Israeli Government

Palestinian children in particular have been targeted as the threat of Israel’s far right grows. Netanyahu’s decisive victory was aided by a far-right party, Religious Zionists, headed by a true zealot, Itamar Ben Gvir. He will probably be appointed public security minister. Coverage of Senseless Israeli Attack on Gaza Typical of Western Unsympathetic Reporting on Palestinians

Israelis have had a tough time explaining its August 5th attack on Gaza. In that attack several dozen Palestinians were killed, including six children, and wounding of 265. Palestinians did not start this attack. Speculation is that it was launched to buffer Prime Minister Yair Lapid’s political standing in the election campaign against Netanyahu. John Mason, contributing writer, discusses the fact that Israel is not alone in its bias against Palestinians—it also applies to Western media.
