'Snow in Amman' draws readers into Jordanian literature
“Mahmood is here to introduce more of us to a plethora of Jordanian authors who, as Samir al-Sharif (one of the authors included in the anthology) states in the introduction, are “young and old, emerging and established, male and female, each with their own perspectives and experiences.” The goal here, as Mahmood states, is to avoid the destructive Orientalizing tendency, to avoid “focusing on the ‘otherness’ of the Other.” Here, instead, is a collection of stories from normal people in normal lives —who happen to live far away from an American audience.”
