Fashion with a message
Syrian designer, Rami Al Ali, showed his support to women through an uplifting collaboration with Atassi Foundation for their art exhibition titled “Personal Revolutions” in Dubai this month. The exhibition, which is held at at 8th at Warehouse 60 in Alserkal Avenue, Dubai, aimed to highlight the beginning of the women’s artistic movement in Syria, and the role that they played in building their artistic identity.
The art show paid tribute to Syrian artists who struggled to make a career out of their art, by showcasing a number of unpublished pieces such as portraits, documents, photos and paintings, all dated back to the 20th century. For his part, Rami displayed a couture gown that he designed back in 2012. The dress was first revealed at the designer’s first couture show in Paris. The design is an ode to Syrian culture, as it reintroduces the concept of Mashrabiya, and highlights vital Syrian architectural elements.
The designer spoke of the collaboration, saying, “It is truly a pleasure to be working again with Atassi Gallery through their foundation, twenty three years after starting my career with them. Being part of Atassi Foundation exhibition in Dubai extends the message of empowering all women, and reinforces the brand’s DNA of inspiring women and being inspired by them at the same time.”
Mashrabiya, which is meant to provide women with privacy at home, inspired the design. The dress is made of laser cut satin that mimics the geometric design of Mashrabiya, giving it the wood-like impression.
