No Other Land, a powerful Palestinian/Israeli-directed film, has made history with its Oscar nomination, marking a significant milestone for Arab cinema on the global stage. This achievement not only brings attention to the unique Palestinian narrative but also highlights the resilience, talent, and cultural richness of the Arab world. This nomination signals a shift toward more diverse representation and paves the way for future Arab filmmakers to make their mark on the international stage.

The film exposes the harsh reality that Palestinians in the West Bank endure daily. It highlights the limited access to food distribution, the constant presence of checkpoints, and the intimidating tactics employed by the IDF against the Palestinian people. Through a raw and intimate portrayal, the film provides viewers with a deeper understanding of the Palestinian struggle, offering a more authentic perspective than the often distorted narratives presented by mainstream media.

Palestinians are Not Just a Statistic

By the end of the film, it becomes clear that this is no longer the bilateral conflict often portrayed by the media, but rather a one-sided story. What makes this film truly powerful is how the harsh reality inspired the two directors to unite and share it, putting politics aside and prioritizing humanity. Israeli co-director and journalist Yuval Abraham, along with Palestinian activist Basel Adra, not only reveal the truth but also come together as two activists using art to connect with people’s emotions, rather than relying on statistics.

It’s important to highlight that this four-year project was created before the attacks on October 7th, 2023. The events of that day have since shaped many people’s perceptions, but the terror that came before it underscores how Palestinians have not only fought to resist, but have also fought to survive in such environments.

There is No Other Land

From the widespread destruction of Palestinian homes to the constant bombardment, director Basel Adra captures the harsh reality of his hometown, Masafer Yatta in the West Bank, reflecting in the film’s trailer, “I started to film, when we started to end.” It’s not uncommon to see connections being formed between individuals from both Israeli and Palestinian backgrounds, especially in the West Bank, where Jerusalem borders the area.

From Bulldozing to Peacemaking

In the trailer, Basel asks Yuval, “What would you do in my situation?” and Yuval responds, “It would be so nice with stability one day, then you’ll come visit me, not always me visiting you.” This brief exchange over a cigarette highlights the shared longing for peace between these two individuals from different governments, both yearning for a sense of stability in the land they call home.
