At a CNN town hall with President Barack Obama on Wednesday, a Gold Star mother asked him why he does not say “Islamic terrorism.” In his response, President Obama said he does not like to associate “murderers” with the entire religion of Islam. He went on to say that using the phrase “Islamic terrorism” can make the rest of the world’s Muslims feel like they are being attacked for their religious beliefs. Building this divide makes it more difficult for the U.S. to gain cooperation from the Muslims who are also fighting terrorism.
President Obama then used a Christianity as an example for why it’s innapropriate to say “Islamic terrorism.”
“I don’t want to validate what they do… If you had an organization that was going around and killing and blowing people up and said, ‘we’re on the vanguard of Christianity’ – as a Christian, I’m not going to let them claim my religion and say you’re killing for Christ… That’s not what my religion stands for.”
President Obama urges people to call terrorists what they are: killers and terrorists. His emphasis on using friendship and understanding to overcome terrorism was a point that many could agree with; particularly, since the alternative of promoting a “West is the best” mentality is hurtful and counterproductive.
