Mayor Duggan Very Open to Hosting Syrian Refugees in Detroit
Michigan is making overtures to take in Syrian war refugee.
Late last month, Haifa Fakhouri, president and CEO of the Arab American and Chaldean Council, said that Syrian families seeking refugee status could call NorthTown in Detroit — formerly called “Chaldean Town” and help and revitalize the blighted neighborhood.
Now, Mayor Mike Duggan is making it clear Detroit is open to the refugees.
Duggan said Thursday Detroit is among the cities willing to “step up” as a host for refugees, the Detroit News reports.
Duggan said he met with President Barack Obama during a Michigan visit after Labor Day and has been in talks with federal officials for several weeks about the plan and is “very willing” to accept refugees, Christine Ferretti and Melissa Nann Burke of the News report.
“I expect Detroit to play a role, like other cities do. This is a human issue,” Duggan told reporters Thursday following a speaking engagement at the Detroit Institute of Arts, the News reported. . “The cities in America should step up. I told the president that Detroit will step up, like other cities should.”
