Even though being an Arab in the Western world doesn’t give you a head start, the success of these stars proves that when we put our minds to something, we can definitely make it – even in Hollywood.
We present to you a list of major celebrities who are of Arab descent and are absolutely rocking it.
1. Magic!
Magic!’s lead singer, Nasri Tony Atweh, was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. Atweh’s parents are Palestinian. They immigrated to the maple-leaf country for a better life.
His band recently released top chart hits including Let Your Hair Down, Rude, and No Way No.
2. Alia Shawkat
Born in California, Alia’s parents make quite the diverse mix.
Her father, Tony Shawkat, is from Baghdad, Iraq, while her mother is of Norwegian, Irish, and Italian descent.
Alia is well known for her lead role as Maeby Funke in Arrested Development, a Netflix original series.
3. Mika
Michael Holbrook Penniman, Jr. who is better known by his stage name ‘Mika’ is of Lebanese descent.
Born in Beirut, Lebanon, to a Lebanese mother and an American father, Mika and his parents fled Lebanon and moved to Paris during the civil war. They eventually moved to the U.K. when Mika was 9.
His hit songs have been nominated for over 18 awards, including a Grammy nomination. He is also a jury member in The Voice France.
4. Zoe Saldana
Even though Zoe was born to a Dominican father and a Puerto Rican mother, she has both Lebanese and Haitian roots.
Zoe’s been the lead actress to more than one sci-fi blockbuster including Avatar, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Star Trek.
5. Tony Shalhoub
Tony Shalhoub is American-Lebanese. His Lebanese father immigrated to the States, then married Shalhoub’s mother who’s of American-Lebanese descent.
Tony Shalhoub has been in over 26 films, 21 television shows, and has been nominated for over 32 Awards.
6. Shannon Elizabeth
Shannon Elizabeth also a has diverse background. Born to a Syrian-Lebanese father and a mother of German, English, and Irish origin, she grew to become vocal about the dangers of racism.
She is best known for her role as “Nadia” in American Pie, as well as her appearances in Jack Frost and Scary Movie.
7. Rami Malek
Rami Malek, born to Egyptian parents, has certainly made his way through Hollywood.
His roles in Mr. Robot, Night at the Museum, Need for Speed, and The Twilight Saga II were some of the few to grant him awards.
8. Jenna Dewan Tatum
Jenna’s origins are a mix of Lebanese-Polish from her father’s side, and English-German from her mother’s.
she began her career as a backup dancer for Janet Jackson, Pink, Missy Elliot and Christina Aguilera. In 2006, she merged her dancing and acting to co-star on Step Up with Channing Tatum. The two eventually married.
9. Vince Vaughn
Vince Vaughn’s paternal grandmother is Lebanese-Syrian, awarding him a place on our list.
Vince is a Hollywood big screen star. He is not only an actor, but a producer, comedian, and a screenwriter as well. He has starred in many Hollywood films including Wedding Crashers, The Break-Up, and Four Christmases to name a few.
10. Wentworth Miller
The stud from Prison Break is also of Middle Eastern descent, as his mother is part Lebanese-Syrian.
Wentworth is known for his roles in Prison Break, The Flash, and for his screenwriting.
