Jews Act Against Islamophobia Today @ White House
Jews gathered in Washington, DC today to protest Islamophobia and racism, as part of an effort to rekindle their commitment to justice across the country to mark the eight days of Chanukah. Activists held nine signs listing commitments to fighting injustice in the shape of a Chanukah menorah.
The action coincided with the annual White House Chanukah Reception with Israeli President Rivlin to show that American Jews stand for full equality and freedom for all people living under Israeli rule as well as people of all races in the United States. We hope that President Obama asked President Rivlin to make democracy a reality for ALL Palestinians.
“I’m here because I believe in the Jewish tradition of fighting for justice and freedom,” said DC resident and JVP member Sherri Moses, “The rise of racist violence and Islamophobia here at home is a great threat to our security as is the continued occupation of Palestine.”
The action was initiated by Jews Against Islamophobia in NYC (a coalition of Jews Say No! and the network Against islamophobia, a project of Jewish Voice for Peace NY); each night of Chanukah, Jews in different cities have been holding up these signs and reading aloud each commitment in a public space. In addition to DC, this has been taking place in New York City, Miami, Chicago, New Haven, Portland (Oregon), Durham, Columbus, Seattle, Atlanta, Boston, Springfield, Ithaca, and Denver.
On Sunday, Dec 13, the eighth and last night of Chanukah, all our cities will hold up the statements as we rekindle our commitments from city to city, from community to community, and from strength to strength. Our action on Sunday, Dec. 13 will be at 4:00 pm at Lafayette Park across from the White House.
