'It was awkward and I didn't know if it was the right thing to do': MasterChef hopeful Huda reveals how she married her late sister's husband

She’s one of the hopefuls on this year’s season of MasterChef, but despite her sunny demeanour, Huda has seen her share of tragedy.

In an interview with TV WEEK magazine on Monday, the 34-year-old revealed she lost her older sister when she was just 16.

Then, when Huda was 18, her family arranged for her to marry her late sister’s husband, Abdulmunem.

‘It was awkward and I didn’t know if it was the right thing to do, but I was young,’ she told TV WEEK.

‘My parents knew he was a good man and it’s the traditional way of marriage [in Arab culture].’

Huda – who was born in Saudi Arabia – explained her sister, Zainab was just 18 when she died tragically while pregnant.

Huda said Zainab had been rushed to hospital during her her second trimester, but sadly neither she or the baby survived.

And she admitted she only found out the details surrounding her sister’s death a few years ago, with her family never explaining what had happened to her.

Despite the tragedy, Huda said she has been happily married to her husband for over 15 years, and the couple are parents to three children.

She even described her marriage to Abdulmunem as a ‘gift’ from her late sister.

In a teaser video for the new season of MasterChef last week, Huda spoke about what had inspired her to appear on the hit cooking show.

‘I grew up in a culture where it’s male dominating… I want to represent the power of women,’ she confessed.
