This March 2020, international acknowledgment of women’s courageous, brave, and exceptional standards of deep moral, ethical, artistic, and educational convictions will be illuminated worldwide.
Madiha Umar (1908 – 2005 in Aleppo) (Arabic: مديحة عمر) is an Iraqi artist who is known for incorporating calligraphy with abstract art. Jumana El Hussini, born in Jerusalem, a Palestinian artist(1932-2018) I am from PalestineFor an immemorial time, women have been the rock-solid backbone figures in all realms of society, irrespective of many male-dominated societies, unjust refugee mental instability, and political edicts which attempts to stagnate their dreams of human life. However, women have often shown that from where ever there is oppression, there is enduring resistance for change. Case in point, Saudi Arabian women sought equality and equal preservation under the law and won the right to drive.
The observance of women and their achievements worldwide began in 1975, during International Women’s Year. The United Nations began celebrating 8 March as International Women’s Day. For the United Nations, International Women’s Day has been observed on 8 March since 1975. The Day is traditionally marked with a message from the UN Secretary-General as well as countless world leaders and organizations worldwide.
Then in 1987, the United States Congress declared March as National Women’s History Month in perpetuity. A special Presidential Proclamation is issued every year which honors the extraordinary achievements of American women.
As we look back, it is a time to acknowledge, honor and pay special tribute to women of color and Arab women who so often remained hidden figures in their accomplishments in the sciences, arts, humanities, and business sectors. One such woman was Katherine Johnson, a woman of pride, and one of the most unique mathematical minds who calculated the precise trajectories that would let Apollo 11 land on the moon in 1969. This was an amazing African American woman and for over 33 years, no one ever knew her name. Katherine Johnson will always shine bright and be long remembered with respect and human dignity as an unsung hero for her NASA contributions.
Truly, a phenomenal woman.
Phenomenal Woman
By Maya Angelou
Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms,
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It’s the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can’t touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them,
They say they still can’t see.
I say,
It’s in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing,
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need for my care.
’Cause I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
