Impact of Arab American Immigrants
By: Yasmina Hage/Arab America Contributing Writer
Immigration is arguably one of the most controversial topics in today’s society. America is often called the “nation of immigrants” because of its large open immigration policy towards accepting newcomers. This policy allows immigrants the freedom and greater opportunities that this country has to offer. This phenomenon is not new and has recently been receiving a lot of attention from politicians and American citizens.
Arab Americans come to America to seek employment. They have established many religious, educational, and charity institutions leading to more worship centers, schools, non-profit organizations, and businesses. Many Arab students and professionals came into the United States as immigrants and have established many large organizations. Their goal to seek greater education has allowed them to gain the knowledge that was needed to create successful organizations. Since then, these new immigrants have become eminent to today’s economic society.
Current Views on Immigration
Many people are beginning to reconsider this policy and possibly closing the doors of immigration, forbidding foreigners from entering the United States. In fact, citizens have been debating on this issue for many years and are trying to come to a conclusion. In addition, several political figures argue that continuing with the open immigration policy would be a possible threat to the country. They also believe that this could lead to the loss of American working-class jobs. However, immigrants who come into the country can enter underserved markets and start many businesses, which would open up many job opportunities for Americans, not take away. Arab American immigrants are entrepreneurial with high labor force participation. They have specialized skills allowing them to enter under-served markets and create businesses. As a result, they increase the number of jobs available in America.
Immigrants and Economic Growth
There is a great importance of recognizing the positive economic impacts that Arab immigrants have had on the United States. Many studies are presented to show statistical evidence that the states with the highest rates of immigration also had the highest rates of economic growth and the lowest rates of unemployment.
Researchers conclude that immigrants have no effect on the jobs of native-born Americans. Entrepreneurial Arab immigrants use their skills to create their own businesses allowing them to create more job opportunities in various fields. As these immigrants begin to form more companies, they will also start to look for more potential employers. This would lead to more job openings in America, increasing the rate of employment.

Arab American Immigrants and Crime Rates
Arab Americans are civilly engaged and restrain themselves from harmful behavior that would have a negative impact on the country. This reduces the crime rate and makes America safer. America is a country built up of immigrants who were guided by the rights of the constitution to freedom of speech/expression and are not identified by a single race or religion. Immigrants work for the well-being of their country by carrying out their duties as a citizen, such as paying taxes, voting, obeying laws, and more.
Role as a Citizen
Arab immigrants are urged to become involved in society. As a result, they can advocate their positions on certain issues that are hurting the country and promote the reform of any wrongful acts. Immigrants are left with no option but to restrain themselves from harmful acts by avoiding situations that may be illegal or socially unacceptable such as drinking and smoking. Arab immigrants are aware that these acts would have a negative impact on this country. Therefore, they will avoid them, as well as all those who might encourage them. This would decrease the rate of crimes in America, making it a better, safer, and healthier country.
