This New York Fashion Week proved that there is more to the big event than watching Kendall Jenner walk the runway. On Monday, Indonesian fashion designer Anniesa Hasibuan did something that has never been done before: she debuted an all-hijabi line of clothing.
The flowing garments and pastel color schemes made for an elegant portrayal of the traditional Muslim garb, creating a stylish line wearable in any city. The line also provides an updated look for Muslim women seeking more modern attire.
The 2017 Spring and Summer collection included 10 evening gowns and over 38 ready-to-wear pieces. The designer also featured a number of jewel-embroidered items and silk pajamas, as well as a few intricately beaded jackets.
Hasibuan is from Jakarta, one of the world’s centers for design and fashion. She has had a passion for fashion and business since a young age and was discovered by another designer in London. She quickly went on to hold her own fashion show and advance her career in the fashion industry.
This debut occurred at a special time for Muslims during Eid al-Adha, a holiday that took place earlier this week.
Hasibuan wants to normalize the hijab in America. Hopefully, by constructing a fashion line of Muslim attire, Hasibaun will not only familiarize America with the hijab, but also challenge stereotypes and misconceptions that accompany the conservative style.
Perhaps these newly designed hijabs will also provoke people to look twice – in a positive way – much unlike the discerning manner that many Americans display when they see women dressed in hijabs.
There are currently only a few designers who produce hijabs and other Muslim attire. This normalization of hijabs in mainstream fashion can inspire other designers to follow Anniesa Hasibuan’s lead in making international, cultural, and religious history.
