YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The Youngstown Police Department made history Thursday with the first Arab-American and Muslim police officer to be promoted.
Mohammad Awad is going from police officer to detective sergeant.
The department swore him in Thursday morning at city council chambers.
Awad says his parents moved here from the Middle East in the 60s, so he’s first generation in the US.
Being born and raised in Youngstown he says he chose to be a police officer so he could do something for his community.
“I wanted to wake up every morning knowing I did something good for the people and I feel good about my job, my career and feel good about getting a promotion,” Awad said.
Awad is entering his 7th year with the Youngstown Police Department.
