posted on: Oct 30, 2015

PITTSFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) – It’s being called an attack on religious freedom and it’s not happening in some far off place.

The U.S. Justice Department is now suing Pittsfield Charter Township over denial of zoning approval for an Islamic school for PreK-12.

“The first amendment right to Freedom of Religion is the most important of our laws,” says civil rights attorney Nabih Ayad.

The township has cited location and traffic concerns as a reason for refusing zoning.

Board members have not answered our calls or chosen to comment. An attorney for the township also did not return calls.

MIA is also suing the township separately, and plans to issue a statement tomorrow.
