For the first time, Fava Pot is bringing its beloved Egyptian cuisine to D.C. proper. Chef and Owner Dina Daniel started out with an Arlington-based food truck in 2013 and then tacked on a brick-and-mortar restaurant in Falls Church in 2018 that continues to receive rave reviews. Starting Friday, you’ll be able to try Daniel’s cuisine at a stall inside Union Market.
The menu deviates from what the Virginia restaurant serves by zeroing in on Egyptian street food like falafel and fava bean sandwiches, plus dips and spreads. Their signature belly-filling koshary bowl will be available. The traditional dish combines lentils, rice, pasta, and a rich spicy tomato sauce that cooks top with chickpeas and sweet caramelized onions.
Other comfort food dishes include gollash—an Egyptian-style beef pie—and pasta baked with creamy béchamel sauce. While these dishes contain meat, much of the menu (below) is vegetarian.
Area manager Stephen Samuels says the company signed a three-year lease at Union Market. The stall will be open Tuesdays through Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. starting tomorrow.
