Abstract:
Two documentaries from the early 1980s provide visual evidence of the colonization, apartheid, and military systems Israel uses to maintain domination. Each of the scenes from 40 years ago has a corollary in the present and poses questions about the future related to dispossession, subjugation, intergenerational trauma, resistance, right of return, reparations, and self-determination.
The two films also offer first-hand testimonies, reminding us that for decades the Palestinian people have been telling the world about their plight, to little avail.
Our salon will discuss the issues that have remained consistent over time, what’s new about the present moment, and what we must do to bring about a just future.

Panel and Moderator:
Aline Batarseh has served as executive director of Visualizing Palestine since 2021. A Palestinian from East Jerusalem, Aline has more than 20 years of experience working with Palestinian and international nonprofits at the intersections of gender equality, reproductive justice, children’s rights, mental health, and social justice. Aline has a master’s degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, and a B.A. in communication studies from Gustavus Adolphus College. Aline is co-editor of Visualizing Palestine: A Chronicle of Colonialism and the Struggle for Liberation (Haymarket Books, 2024).
Salim Tamari is Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) senior fellow and the former director of the Institute of Jerusalem Studies. He is former editor of Jerusalem Quarterly and Hawliyyat al Quds. Salim is professor emeritus of sociology at Birzeit University and has authored several works on urban culture, political sociology, biography and social history, and the social history of the Eastern Mediterranean. Recent publications include: Camera Palestina: Photography and the Silenced History of Palestine (2023); The Great War and the Remaking of Palestine (2020); and Year of the Locust: Palestine and Syria during WWI (2010).

At a young age, Sami was influenced by the teaching of his uncle Mubarak Awad, the Palestinian nonviolent activist who promoted nonviolent resistance to the occupation during the 1980s. Sami holds a doctoral degree in divinity from the Chicago Theological Seminary; an M.A. in international relations from the American University in Washington, DC; and a B.A. in political science from the University of Kansas.
