Sally Azzam is a Palestinian Christian and Israeli citizen who recently moved to Bristol from Nazareth, where she co-founded and managed the Liwan Café.
‘As a Palestinian woman,’ she says, ‘I have always belonged to too many marginalised groups: a woman, a Palestinian, a Christian in a Jewish state. I have often felt that I am standing alone, always aware that our leaders could not be relied on to care for us. Instead, we have to do it.’
She now works with Amos Trust ‘to amplify the voice of Palestinian women, making sure the Palestinian national struggle does not suffocate the Palestinian women’s struggle’.
Sabrin Hasbun is an Italian-Palestinian writer, translator and academic. She obtained her PhD in creative writing and history at Bath Spa and Exeter Universities and currently lectures on creative writing at Cardiff Metropolitan University, specialising in writing for and by marginalised groups.
