Overview: This unique forum and iftar is designed to raise awareness about efforts to bring lasting peace both in Palestine and elsewhere in the Middle East as well as places at home like Southeast and throughout the DC region.
Background: Washington, DC and the rest of the nation is facing a surge in violence, largely involving young people. At the same time, over $100 Billion is spent in foreign aid that directly or indirectly supports violent conflicts in places like Palestine, Sudan, and Yemen. However, our nation is investing only $300 million on Upward Bounds, the nation’s signature after-school and summer program for educating and keeping youth across the country engaged and safe.
We want to call on federal and local leaders to redirect spending overseas that’s leading to violence and reinvest it at home to end violence. Specifically, we hope to raise awareness and funds to support an innovative afterschool and summer program developed by our charitable organization partner, STEM4US!, to keep 100 boys in Washington, DC safe from violence and excite them about cyber, construction, agriculture and other STEM related careers. For youth who have fallen through the cracks and are incarcerated, the group seeks to offer them 600+ hours of cyber or construction skills training, mentoring, and job placement in their last year of incarceration.
Fundraising Goal: $7 Million to launch a 39-Week Afterschool Program, a 9-Week Summer Academy, and a 16-Week Reentry program in the District of Columbia.
