FARMINGTON HILLS, MI
The Congregation for Humanistic Judaism and Jewish Voice for Peace-Detroit invite you to a Lunch & Learn with Dr. Mazin Qumsiyeh. Mazin and his wife Jessie will explore diversity and decolonization of minds and nature, and challenges to climate justice and human rights in Israel-Palestine and globally . A light lunch will be served.
Our planet is suffering from human-induced climate change, over-exploitation, habitat destruction, pollution, wars, colonialism, and other effects. These cause massive destabilization and suffering that impact all living forms. Sustainable human and natural communities are achievable and dependent on creating nature-based solutions.
Dr. Mazin B. Qumsiyeh will discuss examples of challenges and solutions with a focus on Palestine.
Mazin mentions in his book Sharing the Land of Canaan about peaceful coexistence between the different ethnicities and religions in Palestine and Israel. A great many of Palestine’s ancestral farmlands and orchards have been destroyed; bulldozed and replanted with non-native pine trees. These pine plantings have been at the expense of native biodiversity and have been the cause of much wildfire the past few years, subsequently causing erosion and ecological disaster. Meanwhile, much of the water flow to the West Bank has drained wetlands and water tables, causing further depletion of biodiversity. These are some of the issues that Mazin and his wife Jessie will explore.
A renown Palestinian-American author, educator and activist, Mazin formerly worked at Tennessee, Duke, and Yale Universities in the medical field. He returned to Palestine in 2008, and currently is a professor at Bethlehem University. He is the founder and director of the Palestine Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability (PIBS) at Bethlehem University (palestinenature.org). Both he and Jessie are volunteers at PIBS. He has published widely on the topics ranging from cultural heritage to human rights to biodiversity conservation to cancer. He oversaw a number of projects ranging from formulating the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan to empowerment projects with farmers, women, and children. The programs he and his wife created have impacted thousands.
Please RSVP so we prepare enough food.
