ILAN PAPPÉ on GAZA in Context: Past, Present & Future
AL NADWA FREETHINKING SOCIETY, in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace-Detroit (JVP-D), Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM), and Peace Action of Michigan proudly invite you to three opportunities to hear presentations by Dr. Ilan Pappé. Each presentation will be unique. Book Beat will be at all three events with Dr. Pappé’s books.
In support of the Palestinian struggle for freedom in the face of the atrocities and genocide being committed in Gaza, we have invited one of the world’s foremost historians on the region to Metro-Detroit to provide his historical expertise on the issue.“Along with the late Edward Said, Ilan Pappe is the most eloquent writer of Palestinian history.” —New Statesman
On Tuesday, May 14, 2024 Please join us for the second presentation by Dr. Pappé at the Historic Unitarian Universalist Church, home of the Cass Corridor Commons. This is a center that embraces gatherings of people challenging injustice and advancing progressive thinking. Along with EMEAC (Eastern Michigan Environmental Action Council), the space is shared by the Michigan Audubon Society, students from U-M’s Semester In Detroit, and the Sugar Law Center for Economic and Social Justice. The Detroit Independent Freedom Schools and the People’s Water Board meet at the Commons regularly. This is a perfect and magnificent space to hear Pappé’s inspiring voice.
Ilan Pappé is an internationally acclaimed expert, considered
“Israel’s bravest, most principled, most incisive historian.“ —John Pilger, Australian scholar and documentary filmmaker

“Based on groundbreaking archival research, NGO records, and eyewitness accounts, Pappe’s investigation of the ‘bureaucracy of evil’ explores the brutalizing effects of occupation, from the systematic abuse of human and civic rights, the IDF roadblocks, mass arrests, and house searches to the forced population transfer, the settlers, and the infamous wall that is [has turned] the West Bank into an open prison. Providing a sharp contrast with life in Israel, this is a brilliantly incisive and moving portrait of daily life in the Occupied Territories.” —Middle East Books
Ilan Pappé is a scholar and a pro-Palestinian political activist. He is one of the most prominent Israeli political dissidents living in exile, having moved from the University of Haifa to the University of Exeter. He is also one of the few Israeli students of the conflict who write about the Palestinian side with real knowledge and empathy. Pappé places Zionism under an uncompromising lens… The Idea of Israel is not a history book but a close study of the role of Zionist ideology in the making of modern Israel and of the continuing relevance of this ideology today in politics, the education system, the media, the cinema and Ashkenazi-Sephardi relations. —Avi Shlaim, Guardian

In a 2004 interview, Pappé said. “The aim has always been, and it still remains, to have as much of Palestine as possible with as few Palestinians in it as possible.”[8] He blames the creation of Israel for the lack of peace in the Middle East, arguing that Zionism is more dangerous than Islamic militancy, and has called for an international boycott of Israeli academics.
