Abstract:

Israel’s war on Palestine, following the October 7 attack by Hamas, has driven an ongoing student protest movement on the nation’s university campuses. These protests have adopted similar calls for divestment from the war industries supplying the advanced weapons systems the US government is sending to Israel. Common protest tactics include encampments, banner drops, leafleting, and self-education. As the US continues its unqualified support for Israel, how do we assess the successes of these movements? How have universities framed these protests? What has prompted Higher Ed’s extreme responses involving the deployment of urban police forces? How have definitions of constitutionally guaranteed free speech been redrawn by Higher Ed? What has been the impact of the “Palestine exception”? What if any are the limits of non-violent protest, and according to whose interests?

Panelists and Moderator:

Ilan Cohen is a recent graduate of the Jewish Theological Seminary and Columbia University where he was a founder of Columbia Jews for Ceasefire, a collective of students seeking to bring an immediate ceasefire, a full hostage deal, and an end to the Occupation through organizing within their communities. Ilan has organized within the American Jewish community and on the ground in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. His research examines legacies of systemic antisemitism and white supremacy on the development of progressive Jewish organizing power at Columbia University and across the United States.

Rama Ali Kased is an Associate Professor in Race and Resistance Studies in the College of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University. Her community organizing work spans across several major U.S. cities. She has served on multiple boards of community-based organizations. Originally from Brooklyn, and of Palestinian origin, Rama has founded organizations including Arab Woman Active in Arts and Media (AWAAM) in New York City and the Arab Resource and Organizing Center (AROC) in the San Francisco Bay area. She is also a member of the US Palestine Communities Network, Palestinian Feminist Collective, and Faculty for Justice in Palestine-SFSU

Maryam Alwan is a Palestinian-American and a senior at Columbia University. Maryam has been a leader within the student movement to pressure Higher Ed to divest from companies with ties to Israel. She was arrested at one of the first encampments that sparked the international student intifada in 2024 and is a plaintiff in two lawsuits against Columbia. She wrote in the Columbia Spectator, “Weaponizing claims of discrimination to stifle speech and symbolism critical of Israel inherently results in discrimination against those of us whose families were either already displaced or are actively being wiped out.”

Natasha Lennard (moderator) is a British-born, Brooklyn-based writer and Associate Director of the Creative Publishing and Critical Journalism graduate program at the New School for Social Research in New York. She is the author of Violence: Humans in Dark Times (with Brad Evans, CityLights, 2018), and Being Numerous: Essays on Non-Fascist Life (Verso, 2019). Natasha is a columnist for The Intercept, and her work has appeared in The Nation, Bookforum, Dissent, and The New York Times, among other outlets. She is working on her next book, on how we might better conceptualize uncertainty and certainty, for Verso Books.
