Join us in Greater Boston (Cambridge and Arlington) for a weekend of live music and dance with Master Percussionist Issam Houshan. We are so delighted to welcome him back to Boston, on September 14-15, 2024!!

THIS IS A TWO-DAY EVENT

Dancers, learn more about how to dance and perform to live music with Issam at this 2-day event! All levels welcome!

Musicians also very welcome to learn more about playing for dancers from Issam’s vast international experience.

Issam will be teaching in partnership with Boston resident dancer Seyyide Sultan.

Join us for workshops, and we will end with a hafla with a show!

The union of music and movement is the essence of dance. The union of a musician and a dancer to create a seamless artistic expression of oneness between the two is the ultimate manifestation of such a union. Issam Houshan is one of the rarest of talents as that is exactly what he does. He’s been called the Wassan Pharaoun, King Of The Drum, or Mr. Magic Fingers and that only tells half of it. It’s his connection to the dancer that is the essence of his magic. It is a merging of egos serving a mutual and identical goal that few musicians ever master fully. Issam is now recognized as the ultimate master of this art.

Issam was born in Syria and emigrated to the U.S. He was formally trained in the Damascus Academy of Music and went on to drum for a host of Arab music stars and famous Belly Dancers. He is also the only remaining disciple of the legendary Arab drum master Mahmood Salahadeen.

In the U.S. he performed with Sting on the Grammy’s and with the renowned Bellydance Supertars in over 879 shows in 20 countries. In the Bellydance Superstars, Issam became a mentor, partner, and inspiration, giving selflessly to the good of the troupe as a whole.

Issam is featured in the film American Belly Dancer, Solos From Monte Carlo, Belly Dance Super Stars, 30 Days To Vegas, Behind The Shimmy, Introduction to the Middle Eastern Rhythms, Tribal Drum solo Choreography with Zoe and partners with Sonia on The Art Of The Drum Solo instructional album. His album releases include his own Tabel Ya Issam with Jillina, Wassan Pharaoun, The Dancing Drum Vol. 1,2 &3 and Chemistry of the drum, Mystery Of Rhythm, Damascus Belly Dance Orchestra and percussion on the Galactic Caravan albums.

Issam’s background, training and experience have made him in huge demand for drum tutorials and workshops both as a solo artist and in collaboration with dancers across the world. Don’t miss this opportunity to study and spend the weekend in his company!

The event will finish with a Hafla, on Sunday evening, in Arlington, near the workshop place. Only workshop attendees can apply for a slot to perform in the show (limited number).
