After lunch the bus will take us to the new Cass Community in Detroit. The director or a board member will be our guide on the bus to explain the initiatives of the community as we drive through and make stops in the village. Cass Community Social Services is a Detroit-based agency with a person-centered philosophy, dedicated to providing food, housing, health services, and job programs in areas of concentrated poverty. They have a unique project to build “Tiny Homes” which homeless people can rent (jobs are required and provided) and own after 7 years. They have purchased a former convent to provide shelter for 75 parents and children, and a historic church is being developed into a community center. We will make a stop at the World Building for an introductory talk to explain even more details about this very ambitious effort to address the homeless population in Detroit.
Transportation: Meet at the Meijer’s Parking lot on Carpenter Road at 9:00 am.
