Etel Adnan Opens Solo Show in Hong Kong
HONG KONG — Lebanese-born artist Etel Adnan opened her first solo exhibition in Hong Kong at White Cube on June 4, featuring new paintings that demonstrate her fluid brand of abstraction and finely honed sense of color.
Born in Beirut in 1925, Adnan first came to prominence as a writer and poet before being moved to experiment with painting while teaching the Philosophy of Art and Aesthetics at Dominican College in San Rafael, California during the early 1960s. Laying her canvases horizontally onto a table and using a palette knife to apply the paint in confident, measured swipes, Adnan created small, charged works that recalled the artistic forays of early Modernism in their use of focused bands and zones of color.
