Nearly six weeks into the partial government shutdown, an organization backed by dozens of local restaurants has pledged to provide support to federal employees and their families. The Michigan Muslim Community Council has announced that more than 40 area restaurants will be offering free meals to families on Friday, January 25, according to a release.
The group is joining hundreds of restaurants across the United States who’ve pitched in to help the roughly 800,000 furloughed federal workers who are not receiving their paychecks. Numerous restaurants throughout the region have already been pitching in with support including providing discounted and free meals to workers in need.
The MMCC plans to serve dinner to Transportation Security Administration personnel and other federal employees at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport tonight. The organization will also be giving out gasoline cards and grocery vouchers. Restaurants throughout the area including spots like Royal Kabob in Hamtramck, restaurant chain La Marsa Mediterranean Cuisine, and Al Ameer will be offering free lunch and dinners workers with a federal ID and in some cases up to four family members. Patrons should call ahead to confirm the offer and RSVP.
