Mahershala Ali makes history as the first American Muslim actor to win an Oscar. He won the coveted golden statue in the Best Supporting Actor category for his portrayal of a Miami drug dealer, Juan, in the award-winning independent film, Moonlight. Ali’s character spends time with a boy, Chiron, who is emotionally and physically abused for being gay. After a confusing announcement, Moonlight also took home the award for Best Film.
Ali took the stage with pride last night when he accepted his award. In his speech, he thanked his professors, family, and friends for helping him achieve the prestigious award. His emotions took over as he thanked his wife and his newly born daughter for their support. Although he did not mention his identity as a Muslim on stage, he is proud and honored to take the golden statue home.
When accepting a Screen Actors Guild Award last month, Ali talked about his conversion to Islam 17 years ago during his speech.
“I think what I’ve learned from working on ‘Moonlight’ is we see what happens when you persecute people. They fold into themselves. And what I was so grateful about in having the opportunity to play Juan was playing a gentleman who saw a young man folding into himself as a result of the persecution of his community,” Ali said.
Ali’s career began with regular appearances on Netflix shows, such as House of Cards. Ali’s performances vary from short films to movies to series, but Moonlight has been his most acclaimed role yet. Mahershala Ali is becoming one of the most demanded Hollywood actors within the country. Last night’s win was one of the most memorable moments at the Oscars, where Ali made history.
