Criticism of Al Jazeera Reporters’ Convictions

“All three have denied the charges against them, calling them absurd, and their legal teams have said they will appeal.

U.S. State Department spokesman John Kirby said in a communique that Washington had urged Egyptian authorities to take “all available measures” to amend the sentences.

Amnesty International, meanwhile, says that dozens of journalists have been arrested in Egypt over the past two years and 20 of them are still in jail as part of a plan to repress “independent media” and to “silence dissidence.”
