Councilman sides with activist who denounced 'Zionist trolls'
A Brooklyn councilman whose district includes heavily Jewish Borough Park jumped to the defense of an Arab-American activist who denounced her critics via Twitter as “Zionist trolls.”
Councilman Carlos Menchaca last week re-posted on his Facebook page a statement by Linda Sarsour, director of the Arab-American Association of New York, defending Tweets she sent out last month about the crisis in Israel.
Menchaca remarked on the post, “#IstandWithLINDA Estoy Contino, mi hermana! #solidaridad Stay Strong.” He likely meant to write “Estoy Contigo, mi hermana,” which means “I’m with you, my sister.”
Sarsour tweeted a photo of a Palestinian boy clutching rocks in front of Israeli troops and labeled it “the definition of courage.”
When Rory Lancman, a Jewish councilman from Queens, tweeted back, “No, the definition of barbarism,” Sarsour responded, “The Zionist trolls are out to play. ”
“It’s absolutely sickening that liberal New York City elected officials feel the need to defend disgusting anti-American and anti-Semitic remarks,” said state Sen. Simcha Felder (D-Brooklyn).
Menchaca declined comment.
