Afropunk in Brooklyn is upon us. The arts, music and culture festival is pretty much the headquarters for #BlackGirlMagic and #BlackBoyJoy. The 2017 edition will deliver the most powerful performances, superb natural hair products, musical euphoria, and amazing fashion finds. One of the many vendors at this year’s festival is MAD FREE, a service and platform for producing creative content, curating culture and connecting communities, designed by image activist and cultural commentator Michaela Angela Davis.
MAD FREE has been at the forefront of political protest through fashion. Their “Patriarchy is a Bitch” t-shirt — a sartorial ode to black feminists — was released on Trump’s 100th day in office and the first anniversary of the Black Women’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission on Sexual Assault.
Among them, the “Freedom Fighter” t-shirt series will make its debut, celebrating and highlighting revolutionary women taking a stand to liberate themselves and others. Their first shirt is an ode to Linda Sarsour, the co-chair for the National Women’s March, a Brooklyn Native and a proud Palestinian, Muslim woman. MAD FREE will invest $5 to the Arab American Association of New York for every shirt sold at the pop-up shop. Be sure to shop them at the festival and wear them with pride.
