SAMS Global Response Medical Missions: Call for medical and nursing volunteers and translators
SAMS Global Response Medical Missions
Call for medical and nursing volunteers and translators to support our primary healthcare project in Northern Greece through the Fall and Winter!
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with SAMS Global Response (SAMS-GR). Our work in Northern Greece cannot be fulfilled without volunteers such as yourself.
SAMS-GR was founded in early 2016 as a committee of the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) with the aim of providing medical relief to vulnerable persons and refugees. Our first project is in Northern Greece, where we have been working since mid-April. We now work in four official camps in Northern Greece (nearest airport is Thessaloniki) and provide primary healthcare for up to 3,500 refugees. There are approximately 60,000 refugees in Greece – they themselves are vulnerable but the medical care they require is also straining the Greek Health System.
Our remit is to provide innovative, culturally appropriate primary healthcare to the refugees in Northern Greece as long as there is a need and we are able to work.
We therefore require the following medical volunteers for the foreseeable future: pediatricians, OBGYNs, GPs, and emergency medicine physicians. We also require nurses/ EMTs. Additionally, we require: Arabic and Kurdish (Kurmanji) translators. Preference is given to Arabic speaking physicians.
If you do not fulfill the stated criteria, please still get in touch. Depending on the needs, we might consider your application. Volunteers should be able to arrive on a Saturday, ready to start work on Sunday, and leave at the end of their stay on a Sunday. We are asking for at least two weeks and preferably longer than four weeks, but we may consider senior specialists for a shorter period. This will be discussed on a case-by-case basis.
In addition to doctors, we particularly need long-term, Arabic-English translators as it is vital for our patients. There is a particular need through October, November and December 2016 so please contact us if you are available. We may be able to provide support for those able to commit for a longer term.
Please contact, SAMS-GR ‘s Greece Volunteer Coordinator, Nikoletta at SGRVolunteers@sams-usa.net with details of when you are available, the duration you can stay, and a copy of your CV.
Please stay in touch by following us on Facebook and Twitter.
Thank you for your commitment to support refugees. We look forward to seeing you in Greece!
