The Dearborn Board of Education selected Ms. Fadwa Alawieh to fill the Board seat left vacant when veteran Board member Aimee Schoelles resigned at the end of June. Ms. Alawieh was one of twenty Dearborn Public School residents who took part in the application process that included an interview with all Board trustees.

Fadwa is a 2003 graduate of Fordson High School, earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan-Dearborn, her law degree from Wayne State University, and is currently a Wayne County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney.

Ms. Alawieh has always strived to go above and beyond and serve her community. While a student at Fordson she served as President of the Key Club and Senior Class, took part in several school clubs and activities, and was awarded “Most Active Student” by the National Honor Society.

Her energy and enthusiasm for staying involved in local organizations has remained active throughout her adult life serving as a Board member for the Government BAR Association and at the Islamic Center of America. Fadwa is the Election Day Chair for the American Arab Political Action Committee (APAC) an organization she has been a part of for ten years. She is a volunteer attorney for the Woman Lawyers Association of Michigan, and a member of the Lebanese International Business Council.

In an interview with School Life just moments after her selection to the Board Ms. Alawieh commented that she was “overjoyed and truly honored”.

“I won’t let them (the Board) down and I will stand by that,” she added.

Former Dearborn Teacher and Kiwanis Club Vice President, Ms. Rosa Scaramucci, wrote “Fadwa has consistently demonstrated strong family values, educational excellence, and a consummate sense of service to others.”

Former Board Trustee Aimee Schoelles stated in her letter of recommendations, “She (Ms. Alawieh) maintains her composure and actively listens to all sides before rendering her opinion. She is thoughtful in her deliberations and very aware of how her actions affect other people.”

Ms. Schoelles went on to say, “Over the years, I have had many conversations with Fadwa about education. I know when you speak to her you will see the same thing I do. Her passion for education is genuine. Her goal is not politics but kids”.

Ms. Alawieh’s appointment to the Board will take effect immediately upon completion of all necessary documents and submitting that information to the State. Fadwa’s seat on the Board will expire in November of 2016.
