A Celebration of Christmas with Sweetness and Sorrow
By: Yara Marei / Arab America Contributing Writer.
Christmas is Here! The rooftops are dusted with snow, and the streets glow with twinkling lights, spreading Christmas’s warm, magical spirit. The joyful laughter of children fills the air as they build snowmen while families come together to share stories of hope, love, and unity. Church bells ring out worldwide, carrying the timeless promise of peace on earth. In Bethlehem, the bustling bazaars come alive, ready to honor the miracle that began over two thousand years ago. But even in this season of joy, we’re reminded of those who face struggles. Their strength and resilience inspire us, showing that the real magic of Christmas is found in small acts of kindness, moments of unity, and a shared hope for brighter days ahead. Merry Christmas!
Muted Christmas Celebrations For The Second Year
This year, Christmas arrives in a bittersweet embrace for Christians across the Middle East. While the season traditionally heralds joy and celebration, the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Syria cast a somber shadow over the festivities. The region, long regarded as the cradle of Christianity, grapples with deep suffering as its Christian communities confront war, displacement, and uncertainty.
Christmas Mass Amid War in Gaza
The Holy Family Church offered a poignant reminder of resilience and faith in the heart of Gaza City. Despite the ongoing war, Christians gathered for Christmas mass, led by Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa. The church, adorned with a beautifully decorated tree featuring golden ornaments, became a sanctuary of hope. Addressing the congregation, Cardinal Pizzaballa expressed solidarity: “The whole world is with you,” urging resilience and a vision of rebuilding after the devastation.
The plight of Gaza’s Christians is dire. The community, which once thrived, now numbers fewer than 1,000 individuals. Many have sought refuge abroad, leaving a legacy of faith increasingly under threat. For those who remain, prayers for peace and safety replace traditional celebrations, underscoring the gravity of their circumstances.
Pope Francis Condemns the Violence
Pope Francis has been a vocal advocate for peace, decrying the violence in Gaza as “cruelty, not war.” He has called for an immediate ceasefire and urged an investigation into whether Israel’s actions constitute genocide. International organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch echo these concerns, prompting scrutiny from the International Court of Justice. Israel, however, denies such allegations, emphasizing its conflict with Hamas despite the staggering civilian death toll exceeding 45,000.
Jordan Christians
Jordan, a nation deeply intertwined with Christianity’s history, faces its bittersweet reflection this Christmas. Home to sacred sites like the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ and the ancient mosaics of Madaba, Jordan’s Christian heritage remains vibrant. Yet, the conflict in Gaza resonates deeply, amplifying prayers for peace during this holy season.
In Rihab, discovering what may be the world’s oldest church underscores Jordan’s role as a custodian of Christian history. These sites, alongside Mount Nebo and others, attract pilgrims and anchor the spiritual lives of Jordanian Christians. However, the region’s struggles remind its faithful of the enduring need for resilience and hope.
The Struggles of Syrian Christians
In Syria, Christians, once a thriving 10% of the population, now face significant challenges threatening their existence. The rise of factions like the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, led by Abu Mohammed al-Jawlani, exacerbates a delicate situation regarding a secular Syria. Amid this turmoil, the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES) provides hope by advocating for equality and protecting minority rights. However, its efforts remain fragile under persistent external pressures and instability.
A Christmas Message of Light
During these trials, the Patriarchs and Heads of the Churches in Jerusalem remind us of the enduring light of Christmas. Reflecting on Matthew 4:16, they celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ as a beacon of hope, offering grace and salvation in a world overshadowed by darkness. This message resonates profoundly with Christians in the Holy Land, who continue to proclaim the Gospel, advocate for justice, and aid the oppressed despite immense challenges.
Global Appeals for Peace
As the Christmas season unfolds, calls for unity and peace reverberate worldwide. The Vatican’s steadfast support for a two-state solution underscores the urgency of resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Church leaders in Gaza, Jordan, and Syria join this global plea, urging humanity to honor the Prince of Peace by fostering reconciliation and healing.
This Christmas, as lights twinkle and carols fill the air, let us remember the Christians of the Middle East. Their resilience, faith, and unwavering hope shine brightly, even amidst war and loss. In their stories, we find a powerful reminder of the true spirit of Christmas: a light that endures, guiding us toward peace and renewal.
