Asquith author Cecile Yazbek mixes her passion for writing with her love of culture and her history

WHEN a love for good food and writing combine, the results can be wonderful, as Cecile Yazbek found out. The success of her first two books motivated Ms Yazbek to write a third, titled Voices on the Wind.

It is the story of young Australian, Eva, who journeys into the heart of another time to find her mother’s Lebanese ancestry in a place where strangers made new lives together.

Set between 1908 and 1924 in South Africa, a melting pot of Boer, English, AmaXhosa, Greek, Jew and Lebanese/Syrian, she tells the human story of the individuals who lived under the rules of the British Colonial service.

Eva unfolds the old story juxtaposing her observations of the contemporary South Africa that she visits with snippets of Australian ways and thinking.

“I have fragments in the book about my own origins and family history but it’s fiction,” Ms Yazbek said.
