This month, the Milwaukie Poetry Series has an extra-special program featuring readers from the Iraqi Society of Oregon and the al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here! Coalition.

Organizers are looking forward to sharing the beauty and music of Arabic poetry and stories, spoken by Dr. Baher Butti, secretary general of the Iraqi Society of Oregon, and local Iraqi refugees from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 5, at St. John the Evangelist Church, 2036 S.E. Jefferson St., Milwaukie. Other readers will include Massarra Eiwaz, Madiha Shanoun and Bushra Lafta.

In view of the special nature of this event, spoken word in a foreign tongue, featured readers will have an hour to present their words with English translation and an opportunity for the audience to ask questions. There also will be some lecture material presented.

Butti and Eiwaz both work at Lutheran Community Services at 605 S.E. Cesar Chavez Blvd., Portland, and will present their readings in English. Eiwaz is working with a group of Iraqi refugee women, helping them to write their own stories. Shanoun and Lafta at two of those women who will tell some part of their personal stories in Arabic and then will be translated by Butti and Massarra.

An open mic session will follow for all who wish to read their own work, or some of their favorite poems. To get on the open mic list in advance, contact Tom Hogan at 503-819-8367 or tomhogan2@comcast.net.

There also will be a sign-up sheet at the event for those wishing to read during the open mic portion of the evening. There will be poetry books available and light refreshments served.
