Arab Americans Call for Solidarity Day with Egyptian Protesters
The Congress of Arab American Organizations-Michigan (CAAO) announced it will host a vigil followed by a press conference and rally on Saturday, February 5th, 2011 in solidarity with the movement for freedom and self-determination that is spreading rapidly in Egypt and across the Middle East and North Africa. The umbrella group represents more than 40 organizations in Michigan.
The group released the following statement and call to action:
“The CAAO stands with the people of these countries and their aspirations for freedom and self-determination. The Arab American community stands opposed to the totalitarian Arab regimes that have forced their populations to live under oppression in abject poverty and inhumane conditions. We support the marches for freedom, reform, democracy, and respect for human rights.”
The group urges the Obama administration and U.S. Congress to support the will of the people and not of the dictators, as they have been wrongly doing for decades.
“Doing this would be in accordance with American ideals and principles. It is high time to support the aspirations of millions of Arabs who demand dignity and justice after years of suffering,” said Osama Siblani, spokesperson for the CAAO.
