Arab American Museum Expands Arabic Language Courses, Continues Music Lessons

This fall, the Arab American National Museum (AANM) is continuing its popular, low-cost Arabic language and traditional music courses, with a new language course for youth.
Registration is open now through 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016, for Arabic 101 and Arabic 102 courses for adults ages 15 and older, and the new Arabic 101 course for youth ages 9 – 14.
The Arabic 101 adult course takes place from 6 – 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Sept. 20 through Dec. 15. The Arabic 102 adult course convenes from 6 – 7:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning Sept. 19 through Dec. 14. The Arabic 101 youth course will be from 10 a.m. – noon on Saturdays beginning Sept. 24 through Dec. 17.
Class sizes will depend on the number of registrants with a minimum of 10 students required to form a class. All classes will meet in The Annex @ANNM, adjacent to the Museum at 13624 Michigan Ave., Dearborn, MI, 48126.
Instructors for the courses include Maha Saker, senior lecturer in Near Eastern & Arabic Studies, Wayne State University (Arabic 101 youth and Arabic 102) and Professor Aoun Jaber, M.A., Wayne State University (Arabic 101 adult). Registration fees are $300 for AANM Members and $350 for the general public (includes one-year Museum Membership).
The required textbook, Alif Baa: Introduction to Arabic letters and sounds with DVD; Second Edition, Georgetown University Press (Arabic 101 adult and youth courses) or Al-Kitab fii ta’allum al-lughuh Al-‘Arabuyya, Vol I. Second Edition, Georgetown University press (Arabic 102), must be purchased separately.
Registration is also available on an ongoing basis for students of all ages and skill levels seeking traditional Arabic music lessons with internationally recognized musician/educator Michael Ibrahim.
Ibrahim, the founder and director of the National Arab Orchestra, offers customized private lessons and course packages for students of oud, tabla and riqq. All students must provide their own instrument.
Single 30-minute, 45-minute and three-class packages (saves 10%) are available and AANM Members will receive 15% off of all lessons (10% package discount does not apply).
