About 200 people attended the event, which the council throws every year to honor community leaders and student winners of scholarships.
The banquet began with an introduction of public officials and recognition of from council sponsors, volunteers and partners. Afterward, two students were awarded with AAHC scholarships.
Three Genesee County leaders were honored for their work in the community, with a different person presenting each award.
Retired U.S. Representative Dale Kildee won the Community Leader of the Year Award; Lawrence Moon, the founder of Moon Funeral Homes, won the Community Contributor of the Year Award; and Dr. Reem Salman, an assistant professor of medicine in the Central Michigan University Medical School and an independent office-based physician in Owosso, won the Physician of the Year Award.
Kildee was unable to attend the event due to illness, but Moon and Salman each gave speeches to thank their families, and supporters, and speak about how they value their work.
Attendees ate dinner after the award presentations, and the event was closed with a comedy show by host and comedian Amer Zaher.
