ANERA Welcomes New President Sean Carroll
ANERA announced the appointment of their new president and chief executive officer, Sean Carroll, on September 11. He will fill the position left by Bill Corcoran, who resigned after serving ANERA for 10 years.
Sean is an international development and policy professional with 30 years of experience working in Washington DC, Europe and the Middle East. He joins a staff of more than 140 and will oversee wide-ranging projects that aid refugees and poor communities in Palestine and Lebanon.
“I am excited and honored to take on this role—particularly now, as Palestinians and Syrians account for half the world’s refugees,” said Sean. “As ANERA turns 50, it has a strong reputation and a lot of good work behind it, but we are humbled by the challenges that unfortunately continue to grow in the region. I’m committed to ensuring that ANERA does impactful work. Hopefully, that will mean the organization won’t be needed years from now.”
Before joining ANERA, Sean worked in several international development and policy roles in Washington, DC, Europe and the Middle East, including the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the US Congress, the United Nations’ World Food Programme and Creative Associates International. For two years he served as chief of staff and chief operating officer at USAID, which has 9,500 staff and 84 missions around the world and a $1.7 billion operating budget. Sean also served for six years as director of programs for the Club of Madrid, a leadership alliance that includes 106 former presidents and prime ministers.
Sean’s strong interest in the Palestinian cause began 20 years ago when he worked as chief of mission for the National Democratic Institute in the West Bank and Gaza and lived in East Jerusalem.
“Sean brings us senior leadership experience in a variety of economic development programs,” said ANERA Board Chair David Nygaard. “I believe he will bring a fresh perspective that will strengthen our capacity to help refugees and disadvantaged communities in the Middle East.”
On October 13, ANERA will introduce Sean to the donor community at its Annual Gala. The event will also feature speeches and performances by Ahmed Shihab-Eldin, Omar Offendum and classical oudist Huda Asfour. Tickets can be purchased here: www.anera.org/how-to-help/events/annual-dinner/.
