American University in Cairo to Honor AAI President Dr. James Zogby

The American University in Cairo (AUC) will grant Arab American Institute President Dr. James Zogby the Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters honoris causa on Thursday, June 19.

Zogby will also deliver the keynote speech at the university’s undergraduate commencement ceremony on the same day. In announcing the honor, the AUC said in a statement, “This honorary degree is given in recognition of Dr. Zogby’s outstanding political career and leadership of Arab American efforts to secure political empowerment in the United States.”

Zogby, who holds a Ph.D. in Islamic Studies, is a lecturer and scholar on Middle East issues, U.S.-Arab relations, and the history of the Arab American community. He came to Washington in the 1970’s to found the Palestine Human Rights Campaign, and co-founded AAI in 1985 to serve as the political and policy research arm of the Arab American community. He hosts a weekly television show, “Viewpoint with James Zogby,” broadcast on Abu Dhabi Television and Link TV; writes a weekly column published in 15 countries; and is a regular columnist for the Huffington Post.

Separate from his role as president of AAI, Zogby is a member of the Executive Committee of the Democratic National Committee and chairman of the DNC Resolutions Committee. He is also a senior adviser for the polling firm Zogby International.
