Act Now! AIPAC is trying to change US law on settlements & BDS
There’s a lot at stake for Palestinian rights and for our rights as American citizens when AIPAC hosts its annual advocacy conference in Washington, D.C. next week. AIPAC will be pushing hard on a so-called “anti-BDS” bill with legislators and candidates. The bill is an attempt to redefine Israel’s borders and suppress the non-violent Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement. Hidden in the language are backdoors that could reverse decades of U.S. policy towards Israeli settlements. AIPAC is pitching this bill to your Representative as a way to make BDS illegal. And if that weren’t bad enough, it also erases the distinction between Israel’s illegal settlements and Israel proper, effectively redefining the border. The facts are clear: settlements in Palestine are still illegal, and BDS is still a constitutionally protected political speech. Boycotts are are also a time-honored component of justice movements throughout history, from the civil rights movement here in the U.S. to the global fight against South African apartheid. We are fighting similar legislation in dozens of state legislatures across the country. We’ve partnered with our allies at Jewish Voice for Peace to take on this federal bill. We need to take a strong stand against this legislation, and show that a broad coalition supports peace and justice and supports the right to boycott. We need to make sure that our Representatives hear our message first. |
