The beauty of the holy month of Ramadan lies in close-ones gathering together embracing the love, spirituality, and sanctity of this period with family members and friends. A historic element is carried with the month as well, as in most Arab countries people who are observing Ramadan return to the heritage of the country and the day-to-day experiences of their forefathers. Perhaps, one specific feature that transforms the Kingdom’s citizens to the historic times are the folk markets. These souks hustle and bustle with historical products, popular goods, and local manufactures that have a special place in Saudi Arabians’ hearts, especially during Ramadan.
Najran Folk Market

One of the most prominent folk markets in Saudi Arabia is in the city of Najran. The market lies in the vicinity of Abu al-Saud’s historic palace west of the city. During this time of year, it witnesses an influx of visitors who want to live this special Ramadan ritual of touring old souks and utilizing historical products.

While you’re strolling through the cobbled foyers, the first thing you’ll notice is the ancient décor the shops still have. Even the products, which are domestically manufactured and handmade, date back to historic times. These merchandises are a huge favorite, even in our present day.
The Most Prominent Heritage Products in the Market:
Stucco Stone Bowls

In Ramadan, this product is one of the best sellers. The vessel is a hollow vase crafted with very high precision and is attached to a wicker handle, covered with colored leather, used for hanging the pot.

The pot comes in various sizes, starting from a small size fit to prepare a meal for two, to the largest size that can accommodate a whole lamb inside it – a famous and delicious meal known to be a staple on the Najran dining tables in the month of Ramadan.
Handicrafts

These handcrafts are very popular with buyers, especially the handmade and beautifully designed wicker containers which are used as containers for the bread, corn and lamb gravy on the dining table.

Every single detail on these stunning bowls is handmade by local artisans that spent hours perfecting all the intricate lines and patterns.

Tanned Leather goods

In addition to the wood, textile and jewellery productions that the region is known for, leather products are still among the products that are constantly in need by the market.

The most famous of them are the Mazeeb, which is a product that is used to carry babies, al-Masbet, a leather belt placed around the waist, al-Katef, a small coffee bag, and al-Mashreb, a leather container for holding water.
