Arab American Museum To Offer Arabic Language, Music Courses
Learning to speak a new language or play a musical instrument from a specific culture are rewarding endeavors. Each allows for an in-depth perspective into a culture’s history and traditions. At the Arab American National Museum (AANM), educational programs raise awareness of the exceptional culture of the 22 countries comprising the Arab World and the heritage of the approximately four million Americans of Arab descent.
This winter, AANM is proud to present two new educational opportunities to prospective pupils in the form of Arabic music and language lessons, both beginning in January 2016. Registration is now open to students at least 16 years old for an interactive 15-week course in Elementary Standard Modern Arabic Language led by Professor Aoun Jaber, M.A., Wayne State University.
The language class will meet in The Annex @ANNM on Tuesdays from 5:15-7:15 p.m. and Saturdays 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Registration fees are $350 for the general public (includes one-year Museum Membership) and $300 for AANM Members. The required textbook, Alif Baa: Introduction to Arabic letters and sounds with DVD; Second Edition, Georgetown University Press, must be purchased separately. Registration for this course will close at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016.
In addition to Arabic language classes, registration is now available and open to students over age 16 of all skill levels for traditional Arabic music lessons with internationally recognized musician/educator Michael Ibrahim. Ibrahim, the founder and director of the renowned Michigan-based National Arab Orchestra, will offer customized private lessons and course packages for students of oud, tabla and riqq. All students must provide their own instrument.
Music lessons will begin in late January 2016 and take place at AANM both Monday evenings and Saturday mornings. Single 30-minute, 45-minute, and 3-class packages (saves 10%) are available and AANM Members will receive 15% off of all lessons.
